Vow Writing tips

Your wedding vows are super personal, but a little structure can make them more powerful, heartfelt, and memorable. Current clients are always welcome to send me over your vows to review. It can help to make sure the length, flow and tone are similar to your partners if I can review them both. Here’s a simple guide to help with structure, style, and length:

STRUCTURE (easy 5-part flow):

1. Start with a personal memory or story.

Something sweet or funny that shows your connection (e.g., “I knew I loved you when…” or “From our first coffee date…”)

2. Say what you love and admire about them.

Mention a few qualities that make them your person (kindness, humor, patience, etc.).

3. Make your promises.

Include both serious and light-hearted vows. (“I promise to always support your dreams… and never touch the thermostat without asking.”)

4. Acknowledge the future.

Touch on growing together, facing challenges, and building a life. (“I can’t wait to see what we build, side by side.”)

5. Close with a powerful statement.

A heartfelt wrap-up—something simple and sincere. (“You’re my once-in-a-lifetime, and I’ll love you forever.”)

STYLE TIPS:

• Be authentic. Write the way you talk—don’t worry about sounding poetic unless that’s your natural voice.

• Keep it personal. Your vows are for your partner, not the audience.

• Mix emotion and personality. A little humor mixed with depth feels real and balanced.

LENGTH:

• 60–90 seconds is the sweet spot (around 150–200 words).

• Long enough to be meaningful, short enough to hold everyone’s attention.

Heartfelt & Romantic

• “I promise to love you without condition, to honor and respect you, and to walk beside you through all of life’s journeys.”

• “You are my best friend, my greatest adventure, and the love of my life.”

• “From this day forward, I choose you—over and over again—without pause, without doubt, in a heartbeat.”

Personal & Specific

• “I love the way you bring calm to my chaos and laughter to my worst days.”

• “I promise to keep dancing with you in the kitchen, even when we’re old and forget the steps.”

• “I vow to always save you the last bite, even when it’s my favorite.”

Funny & Playful

• “I promise to never fast-forward through a show we’re watching together—unless you fall asleep again.”

• “I vow to always pretend to be interested when you explain something you read online.”

• “I promise to love you even when you’re hangry and to never bring up that one time you were wrong. (You know the one.)”

Deep & Forward-Looking

• “I vow to build a life with you that’s grounded in trust, rooted in laughter, and wrapped in endless love.”

• “I promise to choose you, not just in the big moments, but in the quiet ones too.”

• “Wherever life takes us, I will be by your side—your home, your safe place, your greatest cheerleader.”
